Danai Gurira has built a serious amount of clout since taking on the role of Michonne on The Walking Dead, but now she has an even bigger hurdle to clear – playing the mother of one of the most iconic rappers of all time. Deadline reports that Gurira has signed on to play Tupac’s mother Afeni Shakur in the upcoming biopic All Eyez On Me. A former Black Panther who gave birth to Pac in prison, Afeni was a massive influence on him as a person and is still active in keeping her son’s memory alive over 20 years after his death. Outside of The Walking Dead, Gurira has also starred in films The Visitor and Mother of George and is an award-winning playwright, whose next work Familiar opens off-Broadway in March. Filming is already underway in Atlanta. Demetrius Shipp Jr, Jamal Woolard, and the recently announced Kat Graham have already been confirmed as Tupac, Biggie, and Jada Pinkett, respectively. Peep our interview with Tracii McGregor, who played Afeni in the “Dear Mama” video.
